Pumpkin 2014 Sugar Skull Girl

This is the Pumpkin that I carved for Halloween 2014. I used a combination of carving and scraping techniques to create the different light values/shading and a look of texture to the hair. I wanted to do a sugar skull woman so I looked up some pictures of women with their faces painted like sugar skull and pictures of painted skulls. I drew a concept of my design and adjusted the size to properly fit the pumpkin. i decided to eliminate some of the details from my original design as there was alot of fine details which would have been to hard on this size pumpkin. i printed out a copy of my design and attached it to the pumpkin, then i used a needle to poke holes through the picture onto the pumpkin. I only poked holes for the very detailed areas such as the eye design and the lines around the mouth. the rest of the picture I free handed while looking at the design i drew. there were a few mistakes but in the end i was very pleased with how it turned out and i got lots of compliments from trick or treaters.
